Nelson Mandela is dead. The former president of South Africa died this Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at the age of 94 years, Johannesburg.

The death of the South African freedom fighter Nelson MandelaNelson Rolihlahla Mandela, whose tribal clan name is "Madiba", was a leader in the fight against the apartheid system in South Africa.

He was born July 18, 1918 at Mvezo and became President of the Republic of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

Hospitalized since June 8 in Pretoria, he was in critical condition and was placed on life support.
